Wangcha Rajkumar Government College (Formally Tirap Government College), the premier institute of higher learning in Tirap and Longding districts has completed its excellent journey of 25 years.
Historically, it has a record in pioneering higher education in Patkai region of Arunachal, and fulfills the long-cherished desire of the people of this area. It had a humble beginning in1997 at Charju, Khonsa. In the year 2000, the college was shifted from Khonsa to Deomali via order No. ED/HE-146/2000/167 and the name changed to “Tirap Government College.” Thereafter, in 2008, the name of the college was changed from “Tirap Government College” to “Wangcha Rajkumar Govt. College” via order NO.ED/HE/1291/08 dated 12th June 2008 in honour and memory of Lt Wangcha Rajkumar, a renowned public leader of the area.
The college was granted a permanent site via order No. ED/HE- 146/2000 on 2nd April 2012. The college was permanently affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, in the year 2013 (Order No. AC-187/97) and was recognised by the UGC in the year 2015 under Section 2(f) &12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. The college also moved to the permanent site in2018 after the construction of an academic block.
The campus is situated within the town of Deomali, a sub-division of Tirap District. The campus is quiet and traffic-free. Deomali town is itself easily accessible by public or private transport from nearby towns and states. Khonsa, the district headquarters of Tirap district, and Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, major towns of Upper Assam, are within a couple of hours journey from Deomali. The nearest railway station is Naharkatia (at a distanceof18 kilometres approximately) and the nearest airport is at Mohanbari, Dibrugarh (72 kilometres approximately).
